Rotary Club Of VGC Organises Volunteer Teachers’ Programme, Provides Educational Tools To Olomu Secondary School

Rotary Club of Victoria Garden City on Thursday in continuation of its basic education and literacy month in September, organised a special volunteer teaching Programme with the of learning tools for pupils of Olomu Community Senior Secondary School in Ajah, Lagos State.

Speaking about the event, Rotarian Omotunde Olaleye, Imaginative President of the Club, said, the club was at the school to carry out activities that will advance the learning prospects of the students through the provision of necessary tools and materials.

He added that it is part of the club’s culture to adopt an institution, facility or organisation within its jurisdiction where they can offer humanitarian services in the course of every Rotary year and Olomu Junior and Senior Secondary is one of the schools adopted by the Rotary Club of Ajah.

“We are here today to give the school two sets of computer systems for both the Junior and Senior secondary schools. We also brought volunteer teachers who taught five different subjects in five different Classes of the school, including; Economics, Chemistry, English, Commerce, Career Guidance and Counseling.

“As our adopted school it becomes imperative for us to remember and do something significant for the school in the course of every administrative year of the club. The same goes for the Heritage Orphanage Home which we visited last month to carry out valuable projects for the improvement of the home and some others to be carried out in the course of my tenure as the current president,” Rotarian Omotunde said.

Rotarian Femi Owogbami, a member of the Programme Committee, said the school earned both moral and academic values from the exercise. “The moral aspect is for the students seeing their parents and people they look up to in the society coming down to their level to teach them, which shows the seriousness attached to their learning, the educational value reflects through the subjects taught, which I believe will resonate in them, because it is a special class session.”

Rotarian Celestine Amukamara, President Elect of the club, also believed the programme is a modest contribution by the club to raise the standard of education in the country, especially in Olomu Community Secondary Schools.

He stated, “We believe in raising the standard of education all over Nigeria, and if you observe critically, you will know that our level of education has dropped across the country, so whatever we can do as a club to raise the standard of education both in these schools and all over Nigeria will be done.”

Mrs Mofe Ayodele Abisola, Principal, Olomu Community Senior Secondary School, Ajah, in appreciation said,“We are happy and full of gratitude to the Rotary Club of Victoria Garden City for what they have done to our schools today. This is not the first time of coming here to help us. They fumigated the school during the holiday, planted trees and today they brought musical instruments, home theatre and desk top computers.

“On behalf of Lagos state government and Education District 3, we sincerely appreciate their efforts. And I pray God will continue to bless them all. We appreciate them and we still need them here because they are complementing the efforts of Lagos state governments, because it cannot do it alone. The Rotary Club, especially Rotary Club of VGC have adopted our schools and they are doing wonderfully well.” She added.
